Audition Recording - Band and Orchestra Divisions

The IMEA District I Band and Orchestra Divisions will again be working with multiple “tracks” in the large instrument groups.  Each student will complete their cycle of auditions including scales - sight reading - etude in a particular track.  To keep the audition times concluding at a reasonable hour based upon the number of entries, the following instruments will be placed into tracks (flute - 3, clarinet - 3, saxophone - 2, trumpet - 2, horn - 2, trombone - 2, percussion – 2, violin -3).  To secure the most accurate chair placements for the 1st part players (all-state consideration), the auditions ‘etude’ rooms will be recorded.  A percentage of each room will have their auditions reviewed by a panel of judges.  Those two or three judges will then rank the students into a chair order based upon their review of actual performance rather than speculation and opinion from multiple hours of auditions.

The auditions will be recorded onto high quality microphones and audio only stored as computer file.  The students will be logged by their IMEA audition number, with all school, name, and grade information being withheld from the adjudicators.  A separate worker will be operating the recording process so the judge may concentrate on the initial performance from the student.  That worker will be trained ahead of the audition evening and be proficient with the technology used.  At the conclusion of the evening, the panel of judges will collaborate and the chair placements will be decided.  The ranking from each independent room of the initial audition will remain in the order placed, but will be integrated into each of the other rooms.  (If a student finishes third in their initial cycle room, they will not be able to move higher than the two students initially scored ahead of them.  They may end up placed higher or lower than students in the other cycle rooms, but will not advance or recede against their original room ranking).

Conductor: Jack Williamson - Central Michigan University

Scenes from the Louvre - Dello Joio (Hal Leonard)

Rhosymedre - Vaughan Williams/Beeler (E. C. Schirmer)

Chorus Division Callbacks – Senior Level Only

As voted on by the District I Membership, voice parts with large numbers of entries will be heard in multiple rooms on audition night.  In 2009, these voice parts will be Soprano I, Soprano II, Alto I, Alto II, and Bass I.  A top percentage of each room will be selected for a callback audition at the District festival.

The callback audition will take place mid-day at the Festival.  The callback audition will consist of  a single prepared selection and a sight-singing exercise.  The rubric used to evaluate the callback audition will be modeled after the rubric used on audition night.
