Greetings!  I hope that you have all had a successful year up to this point and that you were able to relax during your Spring Break.  Now is the time to begin planning for the 2008 IMEA auditions and festivals.  Please read through this information carefully.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

FESTIVAL SITE CHANGE: The District 3 Jazz Festival will once again be held at Illinois Wesleyan University on November 1.

ONLINE REGISTRATION: You may begin registering your school for the 2008-2009 year.  Here are guidelines for the process:

  • All director and school contact information will still remain for each school.  Directors will need to update/confirm their information before moving on in the system.
  • Remember, the director that first signed up online last year is considered the main contact person for your school’s online entries.  If that information is incorrect, you should make those corrections at this time.  You can also delete any retiring / resigning teachers from this page.
  • Your school must pay the state registration fee ($25 for each level of Junior or Senior participation, free for Elementary) and be activated by the state office before you may begin nominating students.

ELEMENTARY SIGN-UP:  Although our district does not offer an elementary festival, we do host a JEM session at our district festival, covering topics of interest to elementary-level teachers.  We would like all of these teachers to sign up on the online system so I can contact them with information regarding these sessions and other important announcements.  Elementary participation is free.  If you are not an elementary teacher, please notify those in your district about signing up.

SPECIAL NEEDS FORM:  If you have a student with special needs who would need an accommodation for auditioning (i.e. Braille sight-reading, more time on sight-reading, etc.), you need to fill out a Special Needs form.  This is due to me by September 1 so we can have time to make the accommodations if they are approved.  You can find information on this inside the Special Areas / Special Learners pages on this website.

COMPOSITION CONTEST:  Did you know that IMEA sponsors a composition contest every year?  Enter your budding young composers (and improvisation specialists) into this year’s competition!  You can find information under the Division Information / Secondary General Music section of this web site.

FMES:  If you have a student planning on majoring in music education, encourage them to sign up for the Future Music Educators Seminar (FMES).  Students selected will spend the weekend at All-State learning from a wide variety of music education professionals about what it takes to do our job.  Students also have time to attend sessions and exhibits.  I have had two students participate in FMES, and they both have really enjoyed it and learned a lot from it.  FMES entries are done online from your “Forms” page…just look for FMES.

SENIOR JAZZ BAND REP NEEDED:  John Currey has been promoted to IMEA Jazz Division Vice President, effective immediately.  Therefore, we are in need of a new Senior Jazz Band representative.  John has already lined up conductors for this fall’s festival and will help you through every step of the way.  Please contact Ben at luginbbr@unit5.org if you are interested.

NEW REPS:  Dan Marcotte (Sr. Band), Heidi Blaine (Jr. Chorus), and Elizabeth Martin (Jr. Chorus) have all been elected to new division representative positions.  You can find their contact information below.  Special thanks to outgoing reps Debbie Aurelius-Muir and Mary Beth Wallig for their years of service to our district.
