Auditions:  Monday, October 11

Junior and Senior Instrumental (Concert & Jazz) – Effingham High School --- 8:30am                     

Note:  Upon arrival in Effingham, students should immediately report to their audition room and sign up for the earliest possible audition. This will get you finished and on your way home at a “reasonable” hour.

Junior Vocal – Effingham Junior High --- 8:30am

Note: Vocalists will be “pre-assigned” a time slot and an audition room.  You will not sign up on audition day.  Schedules will be e-mailed asap.  Please find your room and check your designated audition time.

Senior Vocal

Note: Upon arrival in Effingham, students should immediately report to their audition room and sign up for the earliest possible audition.  This will get you finished and on your way home at a “reasonable” hour.

Orchestra – Effingham High School (audition and rehearse) --- 8:30-11:00am

 

Festivals – Eastern Illinois University, Charleston

           Monday – November 1 --- JEM (Elementary), Vocal Jazz, Jazz Bands plus CPDUs!

           Saturday – November 20 --- Junior and Senior Band, Chorus and Orchestra plus CPDUs!

Please note: One of the All-State and One of the All-District pieces will be selected for students to sing at auditions.  The students will not know which of pieces will be selected until the morning of auditions.

Auditions:  Effingham Jr. High School

Any director available to judge Senior vocal auditions should contact Susan Hiddle ASAP.  We also will need keyboards to use the day of auditions.

All 9-12 students must audition.  Auditions will involve the following:

  • Required Selections -40 points max
  • Sight Reading - 16 points max
  • Tonal Skills - 16 points max              
    • 1. Sing the Major triad on E
    • 2. Sing two of the other three root position triads (minor, diminished, augmented) to be selected by the Division Representative.
    • 3. Sing one major scale and one of the relative minor scales. The scales will be sung one octave up and down, with the top note sung only once. Tempo 80-100mm. Soprano/Tenor =D Major and b minor, Alto/Bass=Bb Major and g minor.  Students are to learn all three relative minor scales (natural, harmonic and melodic).  Only one will be asked for at the audition.  Awarding of points for scales shall be 2-points up and 2-points down, therefore equaling 8-points total.  Solfeggio, numbers or a neutral syllable may be used, but humming is not permitted.
  • Tone Quality - 28 points max

Academic Festival Overture – Brahms  (This is the All-State Required selection and will be used as the audition piece, but not performed at the District Festival.

Strings Scales:  C, G, D, A, E, F, and Bb Major  - Also c and g melodic minor

                      Violin, Viola, Cello:  Three Octaves

                      String Bass:  Two Octaves

                      Quarter Note = 120 Detached Bowing

District Audition:  All rhythm instruments should audition separately and not as part of a small combo of rhythm instruments.

State Audition:  All rhythm instruments will audition together, playing the required piece, sight-reading, a blues head or progression and rhythm changes in Bb if they desire.

SECONDARY GENERAL MUSIC “YOUNG COMPOSERS” PROJECT

FMES – Future Music Educators Seminar – Deadline: TBD

This is a great way for students to take part in the All-State experience if they intend to become music educators.  This year there will be a minimum of two students chosen from each of the nine districts and the total number of students participating will be increased from 36 to 45.   Please spread the word to your colleagues and students.  Nomination is through the IMEA website.  Students must write and essay, etc.  Please read the directions carefully.
