SENIOR CHORAL STUDENTS  will need to be prepared to audition on ALL MUSIC

 

Any director available to judge Senior vocal auditions should contact Susan Hiddle ASAP.  We will also need keyboards to use the day of auditions.

All 9-12 students must audition.  Auditions will involve the following:

  • Required Selections - 40 points max
  • Sight Reading - 16 points max
  • Tonal Skills - 16 points max              
    • Sing the Major triad on E
    • Sing two of the other three root position triads (minor, diminished, augmented) to be selected by the Division Vice President.
    • Sing one major scale and one of the relative minor scales

      The scales will be sung one octave up and down, with the top note sung only once.

      Tempo: quarter note = 80-100mm. Soprano/Tenor=F Major and d minor, Alto/Bass=Db Major and bb minor.  Students are to learn all three relative minor scales (natural, harmonic and melodic).  Only one will be asked for at the audition.  Awarding of points for scales shall be 2-points up and 2-points down, therefore equaling 8-points total.  Solfeggio, numbers or a neutral syllable may be used, but humming is not permitted.

  • Tone Quality - 28 points max

Finlandia – Sibelius

Russian Sailors Dance – Gliere, arr. Isaac

          

All strings will audition for District Festival.  Balanced ensemble, size and musical proficiency will determine how many students are selected.  Senior Orchestra will audition on these scales:  C, G, D, A, E, F and Bb Major, c and g melodic minor.  Violin, Viola and Cello – 3 octaves.  Bass – 2 octaves; quarter note = 120; detached bowing; and sight reading.

The harp audition will be:  Etude:  Moderato Scherzando (#19), Universal Method for the Harp (Boscha-Oberthuer), Carl Fischer, Quarter Note =84.  Excerpt:  Capriccio Espagnol (N.Rimsky Korsakov), 4th Movement (Cadenza) and 5th Movement (“R” to the End), Kalmus #A1915 – Luck’s #06468.  The District Chairman will provide tape(s) and equipment to record each harp audition at the audition proceedings.  This tape will be forwarded to the Division Vice President.   Jr.and Sr. wind, brass and percussion will be selected through band audition materials.

District Audition:  All rhythm instruments will audition separately and not as part of a small combo of rhythm instruments.

State Audition:  All rhythm instruments will audition together, playing the required piece, sight-reading, a blues head or progression and rhythm changes in Bb if they desire.  Drum set players will be asked to play a variety of styles at varying tempi (i.e. swing, waltz, bossa, samba, rock, ballad).  Bass players should be able to play a walking line to the Bb blues.  Optional - improvisation on Bb blues.

VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE: Jeannie Craddock, Tuscola - jcradok@tuscola.k12.il.us  217.253.4186

Audition:  Vocal Jazz Ensemble is open to students in grades 9-12.  Students will prepare ALL selections to be sung a capella.  They will also be asked to sight sing and must be able to sing the blues scale, chromatic scale, and scat sing.  The scat singing will be to Jamie Aebersol's "How to Play Jazz and Improvise", Volume 1 in F or Bb.  The blues scale and chromatic scale are available in written form from the District Jazz Representative.
