Junior Mixed Chorus and Treble Chorus Audition Information

The District 8 Junior Division Chorus Audition consists of a performance test totaling 100 points.

A brief vocalization is permitted.

Two pieces will be chosen from the five prepared pieces on the day of auditions and will be posted the morning:  56 points

Students will sing an un-accompanied passage from each of the two selections.

Evaluation will be based on the following:

Intonation 14 Points   Pitch Accuracy 14 Points
Rhythmic Accuracy 14 Points   Diction 14 Points

Rhythmic Sight Singing:  8 points

Adjudicators will be provided with an exercise 8 measures in length.

A reasonable amount of time will be provided so that the student may survey the complete exercise before he/she speaks or intones the rhythms.

The student must speak or intone the rhythm and may clap along, but is not permitted to hum or clap only.

Tonal Skills:  8 points

Each student will sing a major scale.  The scale will be sung one octave up and down with the top note sung only once.  Partial points may be given for correctly sung ascending or descending scale.  Starting pitch will be determined by voice part.  Numbers, solfeggio, or a neutral syllable may be used.  Humming is not permitted.

Tone Quality:  28 points

This area represents a total evaluation by the adjudicator of the vocal quality the student presents throughout the audition.

2.  Scales: (No scale tempo requirement)

Violins: G, Bb, C, D Major -- 2 Octaves and F Major -- 1 Octave

Viola/Cello: C, D, F, G Major -- 2 Octaves and Bb Major -- 1 Octave

Double Bass: F Major -- 2 Octaves and G, Bb, C, D Major -- 1 Octave

Junior Harp Audition Rotation:

Etude #3 – Andante, Universal Method for Harp (Boscha-Oberthuer), Carl Fischer

All Junior Violins will audition on the same excerpts from the required piece.  There will not be Violin I and Violin IIAudition excerpts are available as a PDF or by snail mail.  Contact Sheila Felder for a copy!

Nominee Forms:  Junior Violinists should be submitted as Violin, not Violin I and Violin II.

District 2 AND 8 Schools:  Please note that you need to follow this procedure if your school is not listed under District 8:

  • Select District 8
  • Scroll to the end of school listings and select "SCHOOL NOT FOUND”
  • Enter School information.  Please enter school name EXACTLY as it listed under your home District.  District 8 President, Richard Mayer, will automatically receive an email notifying him of a new school request.  After he approves it, the state office will be able to activate the listing if the school participation fee is paid.

Three Steps to the Violin Audition

1. Excerpt Sheets

This will include all of the important excerpts that combine sections from BOTH the Violin I and Violin II parts.  Up to 4 excerpts will be chosen for the audition.

2. Recording/Adjudication

2 rooms per student: 1 Adjudicator for scales and 1 Adjudicator for excerpts

Scales Score + Excerpts Score = Total Score

Score tally sheets will be used in each room and will be combined for a final score, which will then be put into the computer database.

3. Placement into 1st and 2nd Seating

1-8 (1st violin), 9-16 (2nd violin), 17-36 alternating by stand and section

Single School Representatives will be added to the end of a section after all the available seats have been filled within the ensemble.

3. Improvisation on F Blues – Use the F Blues track on Jamey Aebersold Volume 54 (Maiden Voyage) with the chord changes provided on the Cycle 2 Junior Jazz Etude.

Prepared Piece:  Cycle 2  - All auditions must be performed from the 1st part for the appropriate instrument.  Note:  Guitarists will be asked to play four chords per measure in a “Freddie Green” style to the Bb Blues Aebersold track.
