Jazz Band Ensembles

What to bring on the festival day

  • Your instrument, music, and a pencil
  • Change of clothes (see below)
  • Any extra accessories for your instrument (reeds, valve oil, mutes etc.).  There will be no way to purchase anything on the festival day.
  • Check your music for any other accessories such as mutes, percussion toys, etc.  Whatever is on your part, you are required to bring.  Please don’t expect the host school to provide anything for you.
  • Drummers:  Sr. Jazz II drummer should bring his/her own kit.  Please limit yourself to a standard jazz drum set:  snare, bass, 2-3 toms, hi-hat, 1-4 cymbals.  This will make the rehearsal set-up much more efficient, and you will not need more equipment than this to play the music.  The set for the Sr. Jazz I drummer and the Jr. Jazz drummer will be provided by Rochelle Township High School.
  • Guitars:  bring your instrument, a reasonably sized amp, and pedals and special effects specifically required by the music.
  • Bassists:  Sr. Jazz II bassist should bring his/her own amp.  Sr. Jazz I and Jr. Jazz bassists will have amps provided.  Everyone should bring their own instruments.
  • Guzzardo Performance Music of Rockford has generously offered to provide a drum set and bass amp in the auditorium for the afternoon concert.  This will lessen the transition time between ensembles.
  • $6.00 for lunch (pizza, pop, & dessert.  Additional items a la carte).

Dress

We want to project a mature and professional image to our audience and ourselves.  Please respect the dress requirements.

  • All students (for performance) – Please no jeans, shorts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, gym shoes, etc.
  • Men – Dress pants, socks, shoes, shirt and tie.  Sweaters and jackets are optional.  Turtlenecks may be worn, but only with a sweater or jacket.
  • Women – A nice shirt or blouse, dress pants, and dress shoes are recommended.  Skirts or dresses are not required, as it can be difficult to sit with proper posture while wearing them.

I look forward to hearing all of you perform.  Thank you in advance for all your hard work and preparation.  If you have any questions, please have your director contact me.  See you on Saturday, November 12, 2016.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble

CONGRATULATIONS!  You have made it into the 2016 District 8 Vocal Jazz program.  We are proud to be able to have two vocal ensembles, something that began just last year.  We will continue to feature a District 8 Vocal Jazz Ensemble and a District 8 Honors Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

This will be an exciting, enjoyable, and intense festival and we are proud to welcome guest clinicians/directors Dr. Timothy Buchholz with the Honors VJE and Mrs. Jeannie Craddock with the  District VJE.  They are both familiar with many of your directors and our district and are looking forward to working with YOU!

Two words sum up what you should know for the day…. “BE PREPARED!”  If you follow those two simple words of wisdom you will have a memorable and rewarding day.

You are expected of the following:

  • ALL MUSIC IS TO BE MEMORIZED!  Again, you should have all your music memorized prior to coming to the festival.  If you were unsure, have all 5 pieces memorized!  You are required to turn in your music on the festival day.
  • Have a willingness to expand out of your “box.”  Be willing to try new things and do things differently.
  • Review all information in this packet and that appears online.  You may access your ensemble online folders using the links below.  It is crucial that you are accessing these folders daily as you are preparing for the festival.  You will find rehearsal tracks, recordings, rehearsal notes, a letter from your director, along with other important items!

OCTOBER REHEARSAL BEFORE DISTRICTS!!

Once again, I have teamed up with Mrs. Amy Jensen from Hononegah High School to hold your first ensemble rehearsal.  This rehearsal is not mandatory but is highly recommended.  The directors from Rochelle and Hononegah have guaranteed their student’s participation however we would like to have all of the schools and students participate!  This rehearsal will be on Monday, October 24 at Rochelle Township High School.  We will provide pizza and pop at 6:00 and will have rehearsal from 6:30-8:30.  Please do your best to make this initial rehearsal.  This will help ensure a great concert on the festival day!

What to bring on the festival day

  • Your music, a pencil, a good attitude – All music is to be turned in that day
  • Change of clothes (see below)
  • $6+ for lunch (pizza, pop, & dessert.) or a sack lunch

All-State Eligibility

Only 10th,  11th, and 12th grade students are eligible for the All-State Festival.  There are two state Vocal Jazz Ensembles:  the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Honors Vocal Jazz Ensemble.  Students who do not fully participate in their district festivals are not eligible for All-State participation.

Call Back Auditions

Select students will be asked to do a second audition during the District Jazz Festival.  Students are selected for the second audition based on the results of the first audition performance.  These second auditions will be recorded and used to help determine the selection of some of the students for State.  BEING CALLED BACK IS NOT A GUARANTEE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN OR WILL BE SELECTED FOR STATE!  LIKEWISE, NOT BEING ASKED TO HAVE A CALL BACK AUDITION DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU WILL NOT BE SELECTED FOR STATE!  Words of wisdom:  everyone should be prepared for a call back!  If you are asked – great.  Do your best.  If you are not asked – great.  Continue to do your best!

Dress

We want to project a mature and professional image to our audience and ourselves.  Please respect the dress requirements.

  • All students – Please no jeans, shorts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, gym shoes, etc.
  • Men – Dress pants, socks, shoes, shirt and tie.  Sweaters and jackets are optional.  Turtlenecks may be worn, but only with a sweater or jacket.
  • Women – A nice shirt or blouse, dress pants, and dress shoes are recommended.  Skirts or dresses are not required, however; if worn, should be of appropriate length as to abide by school policies and respectful performance etiquette.

I look forward to hearing all of you perform.  Thank you in advance for all your hard work and preparation.  If you have any questions, please have your director contact me.

I look forward to seeing all of you and working with you on November 14th.
