Junior Chorus Auditions
1. Prepared Selection I, Patriotic Piece
Students will have a copy of the selection in their audition room. A starting pitch will be given, as well as the tonic chord, followed by a repetition of the starting pitch. The student will sing the selection a capella. If there is an issue with a student performing one of these pieces, please contact the District 1 Junior Choral Representative.
- Sopranos - “America the Beautiful” in the key of C Major
- Altos - “America the Beautiful” in the key of B-flat Major
- Tenors - “America” (My Country 'Tis Of Thee) in the key of G Major
- Basses - “America” (My Country ‘Tis Of Thee) in the key of E-flat Major
2. Scales & Triads
Students will be given a starting pitch and will then sing, a capella, a major scale both ascending and descending. They may use solfege, numbers or neutral syllables; humming will not be allowed.
- Sopranos - E major scale
- Altos - C major scale
- Tenors - G major scale
- Basses - D major scale
Students will be given a starting pitch to sing a Major triad based on the tonic of the scale for their voice part (listed above). They may use solfege, numbers or neutral syllables; humming will not be allowed.
Students will be given a starting pitch to sing a minor triad (will NOT be related to the scale for their voice part). They may use solfege, numbers or neutral syllables; humming will not be allowed.
3. Prepared Selection 2, Festival Music
Each student will sing a portion (excerpt) from each of the following pieces:
- How Can I Keep From Singing? - Gwyneth Walker
- I Am the River - Amy F. Bernon
Audition selections will be broken down into excerpts and this information will be sent in the Fall newsletter. The specific audition excerpt will be announced the day of auditions.
The student will receive instructions from the recording and then hear the starting pitch for the assigned excerpt. Once the piano accompaniment has begun, the judge will visually cue the singer to begin. The student will then sing along to the piano accompaniment from the recording.
4. Tone Quality
This item represents a total evaluation by the judge of the vocal quality the student has presented throughout the audition.
Senior Chorus Auditions
Please visit the Chorus Division Audition Information Page for this year's audition material.
One prepared selection will be taken from the State Choral Selections. Audition material for the second prepared selection will be taken from one of the District 1 Festival Choral Selections.
We continue to implement a cap for auditions. You will be able to send 4 students per divisi for a total of 32 singers. Schools with choral program enrollment of over 175 will be given an additional "Flex 8" of voice parts of their choosing. An administrator will need to verify program enrollment to qualify for the "Flex 8."
District choir directors will be serving as room monitors during auditions. Please plan ahead to sign up to work for half (or all) of the evening in an audition room. Details and sign-ups will be provided at the beginning of the school year.
