All singers will complete the patriotic selection, scales, and triads in one room, then continue to the next room to complete the festival music selections. The four areas of the audition are as follows:
1) Prepared Selection #1
Patriotic Pieces: 20 Points
Students will have a copy of the selection in their audition room. For this prepared selection, a starting pitch will be given, as well as the tonic chord, followed by a repetition of the starting pitch. The student will then sing the selection a cappella. Students will be evaluated on tone, pitch, accuracy, rhythm, and diction. If there is an issue with a student performing one of these pieces please contact your choral representative.
Sopranos will sing, “America the Beautiful” in the key of C Major. Altos will sing “America the Beautiful” in the key of B-flat Major. Tenors will sing “America” (My Country 'Tis Of Thee) in the key of G Major. Basses will sing “America” (My Country ‘Tis Of Thee) in the key of E-flat Major.
2) Scales and Triads: 8 Points
Students will be given a starting pitch. They are to sing a major scale both up and down. They may use sol-feg, numbers, or neutral syllables. The upper Do may or may not be repeated.
Sopranos will sing an E major scale. Altos will sing a C major scale. Tenors will sing a G major scale. Basses will sing a D major scale.
Major Triad: Students will then be given a starting pitch to sing a major triad (no upper Do) that will be based on the tonic of their scale above. They may use sol-feg, numbers, or neutral syllables. (For example: do-mi-sol-mi-do, 1-3-5-3-1, or any syllable)
Minor Triad: Students will be given a starting pitch to sing a minor triad (no upper Do) that will NOT be related to the scale they sang. They may use sol-feg, numbers, or neutral syllables. (For example: la-do-mi-do-la, do-me-so-me-do, or any number or syllable)
3) Prepared Selection II – Festival Music
Each student will sing a portion (excerpt) of the following pieces: Viva La Musica David L. Brunner Battle of Jericho Mark Hayes
Students will know ahead of time what the possible audition sections will be from the music, and this information will be included in the Fall Newsletter. The singer will receive instructions from the recording, and then hear the starting pitch. Once the piano accompaniment has begun, the judge will visually cue the singer to begin and the student will then sing along with the piano accompaniment from the recording. The students are again judged on tone, rhythm, pitch accuracy, and diction. Please note that the specific section chosen for the audition will not be announced until that day, so it is extremely important for the students to learn both pieces in their entirety. This portion of the audition is worth 40 points.
4) Overall Tone Quality
The students will be evaluated on their overall tone quality throughout the audition process. This is worth a total of 20 points.
The 2017 Ensemble Conductor will be Robert Boyd. The 2017 accompanist will be Constance Lyda.
